If a concrete quote lands in your inbox before the truck's even left your driveway, that's not a good sign. It's a guess with a dollar figure on it.

Concrete work is a big ticket home project, and yet it's one people often get quoted for over the phone, or from a drive by glance at the property. The problem is that concrete doesn't forgive guesswork. Ground conditions, access, drainage, existing structures and finish choices all affect the price and none of those things can be properly assessed without actually standing on your property.

Here's what a proper quoting process looks like and what to expect at each stage.

1. An initial phone conversation

This is where we get the basics: what you're after, roughly what area you're working with and any obvious access or site constraints. It also helps us confirm we service your area We work across Auckland, West Auckland, the North Shore, the Hibiscus Coast and the Rodney District, including Warkworth, Matakana, Coatesville and Omaha.

2. A site visit- free, no obligation

There's no charge for this and there shouldn't be. A site visit lets us actually assess ground conditions, drainage, access for machinery, existing structures you want to match into and anything that might affect the job. This is also your chance to ask questions and get a feel for who you'd actually be working with.

3. A written quote within 48 hours

We don't believe in quotes scribbled on the back of a business card. You'll get a clear, written quote within 48 hours of the site visit, so you can compare it properly, take your time and know exactly what's included before you commit to anything.

4. Clear payment terms, agreed upfront

Once you approve the quote, we confirm the project schedule and outline payment terms before any work begins. Depending on the size of the job, payments may be staged but everything is agreed in writing upfront. No surprise invoices, no unexplained variations halfway through.

5. Insured subcontractors and materials

Every subcontractor and every material used on your project is covered under our insurance. It's worth also checking with your own insurer about any cover requirements on your end for renovation-type work, but from our side, you're covered.

6. A realistic timeframe, not a vague one

Most residential concrete projects take anywhere from a few days to a week on-site, depending on size, access and site conditions, covering preparation, placement and finishing. We'll set out realistic timeframes as part of your quote, so you're planning around reality, not hope.

Why this matters more than people think

A rushed or vague quote almost always means one of two things down the track: unexpected costs, or a finish that doesn't match what you pictured. A proper process, site visit, written quote, clear terms, exists to protect you, not to slow things down. It also happens to be the only way to price concrete work accurately in the first place.

We're a family owned business with 30+ years in the construction industry and we'd rather earn a job by being upfront than win one by underquoting and adding surprises later.
